WEBSITES AVAILABLE IN CHINA WITHOUT A VPN
A quick internet search yields almost endless results of websites which are blocked in China by The Great Firewall. Living in China without a VPN is not something anyone would choose to do, but some of us have limited funds and patience for them. In 2025, what Western media can one access in China without a vpn? The list seems to grow smaller and more important every day, but I haven’t seen one for the audience of those who live in the PRC and are trying to make the best of it.
In 2024, I paid for a yearlong VPN subscription that worked well for about six months and then never did again, leading me to limit myself to one VPN-enabled device for the foreseeable future. There are also, of course, some days when no VPN works well. For those days, try this list!
Search engines: If you don’t like Baidu, Bing is not a terrible alternative for non-sensitive topics.
News websites: Try your local newspaper. I subscribe to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel mainly for its sports coverage, and many other major cities which lack international coverage (of China) seem to be unaffected. Chicago Sun Times used to work but now seems to put everything behind a paywall.
The largest newspaper site that used to be OK was USA Today, but that seems to be blocked now. Ah, the longing for the times when the USA didn’t need to care about China except for foreign policy geeks.
Left-Wing/Liberal: Harper’s The Nation Daily Beast Current Affairs Utne Reader Alternet Right-Wing/Conserative: The Hill Christian Science Monitor Red State The Daily CallerMekong Eye sneaks in some critical perspectives of China.
Entertainment Media: The AV Club VICE Music News Discogs IMDB Metacritic Vanity Fair China-Related: Sixth Tone The Beijinger Other media: WIRED Magazine Sports Illustrated ESPN Shopping: Western shopping sites don’t seem to be blocked, so consume away. eBay YelpSites one would expect to be available but seem to be blocked currently (check back for possible availability): Common Dreams, Jacobin. And we thought China was a socialist country?!
Here’s hoping that if you live in China and are ever faced with a VPN-less situation, due to a malfunction or budget constraint, you don’t have to feel like you’re in a sensory deprivation tank! I find these sites very helpful on my hourlong commute between campuses when teaching. Welcome your suggestions for more and what I’ve missed.
Obviously, the trend in recent decades has been towards blocking more sites and apps, so this list could easily become outdated. Apologies for infrequent updates.
